\"Five cuts: that's where the separation starts\" - Deftones

I've happened upon a most wonderful conclusion, proof-positive that I am getting smarter in my passing years:

It's far too much to tell a human being not to tie themselves to another; that's foolish doggery. But, safeguard yourself, at least. Expect nothing from everyone. Hold those in your esteem to the highest regard, but expect nothing from them. That way, everything that the object of your affection does for you or towards you is a pleasant surprise. Everyone loves surprises, and it's easy for others to step outside of the box that you've made for them if the box has no boundaries. It's easy for someone to exceed your expectations if you have none reserved for them. A nod would be enough to send you reeling. It's quite utopian, don't you think? To see the world with these eyes is to constantly be amazed at the lengths others will go for you. Lowered expectations will have us all feeling like queens and kings of our lives again, and that's more than we could ever ask for, don't you think?
